Pie Day
Tomorrow is Pie Day.
Obviously not the day we eat the pies. That comes on Thursday. But it is the day for making the pies for the day we’ll eat them. It was the day Lauren and I made the pies for Thanksgiving.
Some years we weren’t living in the same town, so we had to make pies over video conferences. But it was our day for making the pies.
This year will be my second Thanksgiving without Lauren. It will be my first Thanksgiving without Zoe since 2008. And it’ll be my twenty-ninth Thanksgiving without Dad.
So Pie Day will be a little sad this year. A little sadder, even, than last year, my first without Lauren since 1997.
But…
This will be my seventh Thanksgiving with Diane, Brett, Stephanie, and Charlie. It will be my forty-first Thanksgiving with Jon and Brady. It will be the sixty-fourth Thanksgiving with Mom and Malinda.
Oh, sure, we don’t always have the opportunity to physically be in the same place for Thanksgiving. But I’m thankful for them being in my life nonetheless. On Thanksgiving and on every other day of the year.
So this year, I’m thankful for the 7 Thanksgivings I’ve had with Diane, Brett, Stephanie, and Charlie. I’m thankful for the 41 I’ve had with Jon and Brady. And I’m really thankful for the 64 I’ve had with Mom and Malinda.
I’m also thankful for the 35 Thanksgivings with Dad. I’m thankful for the 16 I had with Zoe. And I’m thankful for the 28 I had with Lauren.
That’s an awful lot of Thanksgivings I’ve been blessed to spend with some awfully remarkable people in my life. For that, I’m thankful.
Oh, yeah…I’m also thankful for pies. Especially the ones Lauren and I will make tomorrow.
On Pie Day.
P. S. It is legal in all 50 states (and in all 195 countries across the world...probably) to eat pumpkin pie as an appetizer and for dessert on Thanksgiving. So go wild.
And I am thankful for all the pies I have made (both good and bad) and for my family both still here and those in heaven. Thank you, Joe, for reminding us how thankful we should be for pies and the memories.
ReplyDeleteSo many memories connected with pies. I am thankful for them all.
